Overall I like most of the characters in the book besides the principal who always fights with Dillion. He gets too personal with him
ReplyDeletei agree, bringing up Preston in the middle of the argument was way too personal with a very sensitive subject.
DeleteI agree as well. The principal is super mean while the rest of the characters are interesting and worth a read besides the principal.
DeleteNortie is one of the four swimmers on Frost high school swim team. I personally find him one of the most interesting characters because I love his drive to finish out whatever he is tying to complete. An example of this is when he signs up for stotan week but has no clue what stotan week is. Nortie is a character that is rather hard on himself and doesn't give himself much credit. When Nortie is in the water he is unstoppable and for those brief moments when he is swimming he is free from his abusive father. Nortie plays a big role in way the story is shaped, from when his incident at the daycare happened to when he tells the guys about his brother. He is a character that likes to go against the wind and does whats going to make him the best he can be despite what others tell him to do.
ReplyDeleteWell said spencer. I agree that he is a big part of the story and he also plays a big role in Walters life because of the lack of family support walter turns to his friends to be there for him. I like to think he also pushes Walter to finsh what he's starting too.
Deletei agree with you spencer. Nortie is a very big part of the story and helps keep the gang together
DeleteI agree with you. The way you described him is the exact way I see him as I read this book. I also agree that other the Walker, he is the most important and plays one of the biggest roles in this book
DeleteI agree spencer. he is a strong kid who just wants to help people and tries to run from his dad.
DeleteGoing on what Spencer has said. The way I have imagined it is that nortie is able to take the anger and emotion he has built up from home. Instead of freaking out or losing his temper he takes that energy and turns it into something positive or athletic.
DeleteGood analysis.
DeleteMy favorite character in the Chinese Handcuffs is Dillon because he is very caring and the way he writes to his brother makes me like him more. I personally write my thoughts down in a journal when I don't feel like talking to anyone and because I have trust issues LOL and I connect with Dillon on that. He's also very thoughtful when it comes to both Stacy and Jen and I'm excited to learn more about Dillon's character as a whole.
ReplyDeleteHe is my second favorite character, if preston wouldnt have died dillon would be toats different
DeleteI also like Dillon! I feel the same way as you, I think that Dillon is very caring and I do like how he writes to his brother it shows how Dillon feels.
DeleteI agree with you Prutha because I also have trust issues. I can also connect with Dillon because he writes his thoughts down, and I do that too.
Deletei agree, Dillon is very caring to the people he trusts, he isn't my favorite, but he is a great character
DeleteGood connection with the character.
DeleteMax II Song is the coach for the Frost high school swim team. as well as a mentor and father figure to the main character walker and his fellow team mates. Max reminds me of a karate master from an old 1980's movie he is full of wisdom and knowledge but shares it with people as a riddle or puzzle. Plus he actually taught Walker karate, But overall max is the reason all of these trouble kids have a positive outlet in there lives and even though he would never put that into words. I think he knows it.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Foster that Max gives these kids something to look forward to when they come to school. I think he also plays a huge role in their life like you said with giving them helpful advice and words of wisdom to live by.
Deleteagreed. As a young freshman, Max has a lot of wisdom and care for others.
DeleteWell done.
DeleteI picture Walter as kind of this skinny innocent kid who mostly keeps to himself and his friends. At some times I almost feel bad for him because of the lack of support he kids from his parents and family. He has a very deep passion for swimming and sometimes almost seems like it's all he really cares about. I think stotan week will bring out the best in Walter.
ReplyDeletenoice
DeleteWell said Patrick. I agree with you that Stotan Week will bring out the best in Walker, but to be more broad it will bring out the best in all the swimmers. I also think that is helped Walker out with his relationship with Devenne.
DeleteWell written Pat. I see your prospective on where Walter is a skinny innocent kid. Another thing that I image when I read about Walter is I think he is a shy character and only opens his mind up to his friends cause he is scared of his ideas and knowledge getting rejected from others.
DeleteI feel that the distance walker has from him family is definitely not the best situation. Since a lot of successful athletes thank there family and the support they gave them but with walker I think that the distance really emphasizes that this is what walker is passionate about and wants to do, and the fact he is doing this for nobody except for himself.
DeleteOnly one response to other blogs??
DeletePreston, the brother of Dillon who lost his battle to drugs, i compare him to a therapist. Even though he is not around he still helps Dillon. Dillon writes to him with these letters, almost as a journal. Dillon talks about how he misses him in these letters, and about his girl problems. I imigaine he was kind of let himself go. Didnt care about wht he did. Preston leaves a huge foot print on this book. If he was still around Dillon would act completely different, more confidence, and some one to talk to. If i lost my brother that young, I would be devastated!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your comparison. Dillon copes to his brothers death by writing him letters that Preston is never going to read. It helps Dillon to write about it, almost like he is talking to a therapist. I really like that comparison.
DeleteI like how you talked about his character if his brother was alive.
DeleteThe character I chose is TB Jens step dad. From what I read an what I think he looks like is he's tall with black hair and he is really rich, and he wears a sute and tie. He is real smart, and abusive person, he also drinks. He behaves like a normal sex offender, smart and threatens his victims with someone the victims love. I hate TB and anyone who abuses there wires and their doters. It doesn't matter who you are it is not ok to be abused or to be the abuser.
ReplyDeletehe is a bad dude. it's an important twist to the story. it helps with the whole Chinese hand crufts ideas.
DeleteI agree with you that he seems very rich because he wears fancy clothes and things. And he is a very bad dude! He shouldn't be doing what he is doing.
DeleteI would agree with you. TB is a very bad man but it does add a great twist to everything, it adds a little contrast with the story.
DeleteHe is a bad person mainly, because he blackmailed a nine year old so i would agree he is a bad guy. Just going to put this out there there is no normal sex offenders out there.
DeleteI agree with you! he seems rich very mean and should not being doing what he is!
DeleteI agree he is terrible. You don't rape young children.
DeleteGood description.
DeleteMy favorite character in this book is Dillon. I think Dillon is really interesting and he is like the main character. I believe that Dillon is very kind hearted and cares about everyone that's why I like him so much. He talks a lot about how he misses Preston and shows his feelings throughout the book towards everyone and that's what I love. I think that Dillon looks very handsome, tall, dark hair because he is an athlete.
ReplyDeleteYes, he shows his emotions to everyone including his brother throughout the story very well. Also thats how i would describe him as well
Deletei agree with that but i also believe that he is rather quiet around everybody
DeleteI AGREE WITH YOU THAT HE SHOWS HIS EMOTION ALOT TOWARDS EVERYONE
DeleteI agree with you Amber! He is very caring to others especially to his brother even though he is dead. He writes in his journal how much he cares for im.
DeleteI agree with you Amber!
DeleteThis is a very good description i agree with you 100%!
DeleteI agree Dillon is a very good kid. He seams like a good high school kid but he gets into trouble every now and again like we all do.
DeleteI agree with you because he cares about others and his character is very well liked throughout the book
DeleteI agree that Dillon is the best character in the book because is he very kind hearted.
DeleteDillon is a very kind guy and does care for everyone I agree! I think his brother dying really changed him for the better. He also has a side to him that is trouble, like going into the bar and telling the mad bikers to come to his school. Haha.
DeleteNice job talking about his personality.
DeleteThe character I chose is Dillon Hemingway in the book Chinese Handcuffs. I envision this kid like Channing Tatum in 21 Jump Street where he is actually a late 20 year old going to high school again but in the actual story he is in high school yet. I see this because he is so mature physically and strong as well and also a sense of independence. The impact on this story is: 1.) Dillon is one of the main characters 2.) Is largely in contact with Stacy and Jen especially when she got hurt because hes the trainer. Also a big impact in the story is both Stacy and Dillon where at the point where Crutcher introduces the Chinese handcuffs, this is a great point in the story because this is where the title comes in and he learns a valuable lesson. You can't just pull away from your problems, you have to release the pressure in order to get out.
ReplyDeletethat is a good description but i believe that channing Tatum is a little to old to be comparing Dillon to i see Dillon as a small freshman
DeleteI also agree with this but i think Dillon is almost to sketchy of a person to be compared with Channing Tatum. Maybe if Channing Tatum dealt drugs, I could see this being a better comparison, Otherwise i totally agree
DeleteNice connection with a movie.
DeleteI'm choosing Preston because it is really easy to visualize him. i can compare him to lutenit Dan from forest gump. his legs just barely stick out the front of the chair. his pants tied shut at the knees. his hair is down to his shoulders, and he has some what of a beard. he has a sour attitude and a bottle of something wrapped in a paper bag. he has blood shot eyes and pale skin. i believe that he stands as a symbol of just how fast your life can go down hill
ReplyDeletelieutenant dan YOU GOT NEW LEGS
DeleteYeah i agree that presten is really easy to visualize.
Deleteoh my gosh! i envisioned lieutenant Dan for Preston as well after he lost his legs
DeleteGreat overall analysis at the end.
DeleteThe character I like the most is Nortie. Nortie is a kind and caring person who will go out of his way to help anyone and everyone he can, even if he doesn't like the person or know the person. I love that Norite can help people in need, I always wish that I can be like that but I get scared that I would say something wrong. Nortie and I have don't have a lot things in common but i can relate to him. Nortie and I try to help people to our best of our ability, the only difference in that is he succeeds in helping people and I don't. Norite seems like a person that i could get along with very well.
ReplyDeleteTrue, he's always there for the others even though he also needs help with his own problems.
DeleteI like how you connect with the character and feel like you could be friends.
DeleteDillion, i imagine to him to be tall and fit. He acts like he doesnt really care. i think be acts that way because of the way the principal treats him. he calls him selfish and need to particiapate in acivities but dillion just doesnt care what he has to say to him. Dillion has a huge part in this book. he is connected to preston because they are brothers. HE IS JENS BASKETBALL TRAINER AND ASKS HER OUT ON A DATE. HE IS GOOD FRIENDS WITH STACY BECAUSE STACY DATED HIS BROTHER PRESTON BEFORE PRESTON DIED.
ReplyDeleteThat's What I also think
DeleteI don't think that he just doesn't care but he likes to make Mr. Caldwell mad.
DeleteI think he cares, but he feels he needs to defend himself when he's around.
DeleteI choose T.B. who is jennifer's stepdad and i think he is very well kept person and he always looks sophisticated and he is always putting on a show and he doesn't show his true self till he does them bad things to Jennifer. With T.B. being in the story shows how rough of a life that Jennifer has had and she will go to any extent to save her little sister and keep her safe from him.
ReplyDeleteJEN DOES HAVE A VERY ROUGH LIFE WITH HER REAL DAD AND TB TORMENTING HER
DeleteYou sort of switched from TB to Jen. Remember to focus on just one.
DeleteThe character I chose is TB. I imagine that he is short and chubby with really short blond hair and a Hitler stash. I think that because he is a bad dude and acts like a creep, but can act serious. He behaves normal around adults and is a opposite person with children.
ReplyDeleteI thought of him as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and a Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Someone who is very good in a fight but also someone very smart and able to get out of trouble.
DeleteI'd say he's more of a Christian Grey from fifty shades. He is rich, but he has a weird fetish when it comes to things with women. TB is a normal guy in the adult world but freaky in the private parts of life.
Deletei think he is more of a fifty shades of grey dude as well he has a weird fetish and his is little kids
Deleteyes, I agree he is a very bad guy. He doesn't just abuse Jen but when he gets drunk he hits her mom. The one time infact he punches Jens mom as hard as he could in the gut.
DeleteI agree with the bad boy deal...but your description of him seems a little off?
DeletePreston is the one character who is dead throughout the story. I can't really connect to him but I can really visualize how he looks, acts, and behaves. I feel like he would have been the one who wouldn't have taken care of himself as much. For example, he would have messy hair, a thick beard,...
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Ryan scene he was careless I could see him looking a lot more dirty
DeleteI just think he would look like a bum. He would act very inappropriate and upset. He would also be the one to behave poorly.
DeleteGood description.
DeleteNortie is the character I can visualize the best. I can see him and a well put together guy that doesn't have a ounce of fat on him with the way Walker describes his work ethic. I also see him having a nice flow of brown hair. His behaviors are easy to point out because of the way his dad beats him and with the way he acts all around in the book. I see him being very jumpy when he his around a group of people and also when he is in crowds I see him being the type of person where he is constantly clinching his hands. But the way he is described with words he is known as a very kind and caring person to all of his friends and more importantly his father who beats the supreme crap out of him.
ReplyDeleteHe does hide his secrets well.
DeleteI envision Dillon as that one kid who always wears a leather jacket but is super athletic. I feel like he is the kind of guy who is not very outspoken and keeps to himself until someone pisses him off. He has a huge impact on the story as he is caught in the middle of many horrific life events between the three main characters, and he sort of acts as a middle man between himself and the two other main characters
ReplyDeleteYeah Dillon has a pretty rough life being involved with so many people who have major problems and his own troubled past.
DeleteI cant really put anything to Nortie except that he may be 5'9 I feel like if I picture him he will have a lot of bruises. Maybe blonde short cut hair that flops every time he moves his head
DeleteThat is exactly what i think he looks like
DeleteGreat description! I like the middle man comment.
DeleteEven though all the characters are great I would say Jennifer is the best, because she had a very dark childhood with her father which affected her deeply, and now she is a star basketball player. It's great she watches out for her sister, because i wouldn't trust TB after what he did to Jen when she was nine. It would be very hard to be in Jens shoes and not tell her mother what had been happening.
ReplyDeleteYour character Jennifer reminds me alot of nortie from Stotan he has also had a dark childhood and father drama. Now he is a great swimmer who takes all of this emotions toward swimming
DeleteDoes her becoming a star basketball player maker her strong, or is it just something to help cope with what is going on. She mentioned how her studies and basketball distract her and keep her busy away from her home life.
DeleteBut will her mom believe her??
DeletePreston is Dillon's brother who as recently died. based on the things Dillon has said about him it is easy to visualize how he looked and acted, especially toward the end of his life. He was small, much smaller than Dillon, given that Dillon told us that Preston was always in a bad mood and always on drugs i doubt that he took very good care of himself and his personal hygiene, in addition to his rapidly deteriorating mental health. He was also missing both his legs as Dillon explained. i think he would have looked very sad and depressed all the time because of these things.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything you said! At first though, I wouldn't have envisioned him as small but after you get into it. Then I really started envisioning him as small.
DeleteGood analysis.
DeleteMy favorite character from Chinese Handcuffs is Jen. I imagine her to be an average height of 5'7" and around 135lbs. She is the kind of girl who is pretty without all of the makeup on her face. She is pretty strong/built especially for basketball. She is important in the story because of her harsh past. She does not trust guys easily because of her own father sexually abusing her when she was little. She did not really want to go on a date with Dillon because she is iffy about guys, but she agreed to it. She is almost maybe willing to tell Dillion about her deep secret about her past. Dillon was upset because he could not be sexual with her or even touch her when they went on the date. I think throughout the story she will eventually tell the truth to Dillon.
ReplyDeleteGood description of Jen!
DeleteI like your description of Jen, except I think she is taller like 5'10" to 6'. I also think she will tell Dillon about her past eventually.
DeleteI Agree with you because she is a basketball player she would be taller and be more physically built.
DeleteI agree with your description of Jen. Its very good!
Deletethat is an excellent description of jen
DeleteNo matter what height she happens to be, I do think she will have to tell Dillon. When/if he finds out he will probably be pissed and try to help her, but then realize their isn't much he can do. (That is unless gets her out of the house.)
DeleteGreat description!
DeleteI picture Preston when he was a live to be more of a person who would wear more black clothing because he was more of a darker person and he would have more of a long dark dirty hair. He would be more antisocial and have a hard time getting along with others. He would be someone that would get into a lot of fights with others or have spent a lot more time in jail because of the drug use he does.
ReplyDeleteInteresting thoughts.
DeleteThe character I like the most is Nortie. I like Nortie because despite the problems he is facing at home once he hit the water he is taking his frustration out when when he is swimming. I think that the impact Nortie plays proves that the group will go beyond to help each other out of a rough time. For example, when Nortie showed up to prom beaten and drugged the boys went into protective mood and went to where he got the drugs and took him to the hospital. After that incident Nortie now lives with walker. Nortie doesnt really act like your normal teenage, only because he didnt have a normal life so he just pushes himself to do better. I cant really picture him I can only say that hes like 5'9
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Nortie, is a great character. He can be pictured as a role model, because of all he has gone through he stays strong, and continues in the right path in life.
DeleteGood description.
DeleteI envision Coach Sherman as a woman about 40 years old with sandy blonde hair. Coach Sherman is the head coach of the very successful girls basketball team at Chief Joseph High School. She is the only person that Dillon trusts and he frequently asks her for advise. Coach Sherman also acts as a restraint for Mr. Caldwell who sometimes goes a little too far with his discipline.
ReplyDeletethat is how i see her as well. i also see her as a very honest person as well.
DeleteWhy do you connect with this character?
DeleteMy favorite character in the book, Chinese Handcuffs so far is Dillon. I see him as a caring and a strong person, that is why I like him so much. Dillon is constantly writing letters to his deceased brother which shows he still wants to somehow have a connection with his brother. I visualize him as average sized teen, height wise, but his body is more built and has more muscle than the average boy. The biggest impact Dillon has on the book is that he is one of the main characters and he also plays a major role with Jen and Stacy.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your description of Dillon.
DeleteI chose Preston because he is one of the most described characters in the book and easy to visualize. Preston committed suicide and that had a huge impact on Dillon and in the book his brother Dillon is writing him letters and in the letters he describes things about his brother before he died. I visualize Preston as a guy who got in to an accident and is now in a wheel chair with no legs, he is also fit and looks like he played sports before his accident, I also see he looking kind of run down, tired, maybe even depressed.
ReplyDeleteAgreed with everything! I understand how you see how he's looking run down. I also see him as very depressed myself. Depression is the Big Key in my mind.
DeleteGood analysis of Preston.
Deletethe character i visualize the best if Preston. there are three different versions of Preston that i can visualize. the first is before Preston started on drugs or joined the gang. this version of him i see as a no nonsense kind of person, who was serious about his education. the next version of Preston i imagine is when Preston first joins the gang and gets his bike. i imagine him to look and act a little like the bikers from the Miami vice episode viking bikers from hell. the last version of Preston that i envision is a younger version of lieutenant Dan from Forrest Gump. the similarities i see between the two is startling with the amputated legs and the drugs and alcohol problem along with their attitudes it is crazy.
ReplyDeleteI like how you talked about him in 3 different ways.
DeleteI chose Nortie as my character because of his actions and influence on his friends. I believe he is a good kid who cares too much about other people. I also see this kid in very good shape and skinny. I feel like he is probably very timid around some people especially depending on there actions. the reason I say that is because of his abusive father who has been a bad influence on him. I think with Norties's drive he can overcome his father's abusive ways and find his path after high school.
ReplyDeleteInteresting...I like the part about his drive.
DeleteIn the book Chinese Handcuffs I chose Dillon for my favorite character because he writes to his dead brother Preston which makes him very caring. I picture Dillon being tall, very strong, and with dark brown hair. He is a big impact in the story because he is one of the main characters and cares a lot for Jen and Stacy also.
ReplyDeleteGood.
DeleteMy favorite character in the book, Chinese Handcuffs is Dillon. The reason why he is my favorite character is because he is very caring. He shows he cares about his deceased brother by writing him letters and bringing back memories they had. He also cares a lot of Jen and Stacey. I picture him as a tall buff teenage boy. He has a huge impact on the book because he is the main character and he deals with a lot of horrific events throughout his life.
ReplyDeleteOk analysis.
DeleteThe character I choose is Preston. In my mind I envision him with dark hair and a scruffy beard. I see him as a angry person. His skin is an uneven tone, by looking at him, you could guess he was using drugs. I picture him sitting in a electric wheel chair and has little stubs as legs. Picturing him does not give you a welcoming feeling, he would make you a little uncomfortable or scared. The impact this character has made on this story is huge. Without Preston this story would not be what it is. The other characters would have not thought about him as much as they do now. Their outlook on Preston would have been the way it was when he was alive. Almost like they hated him. When really they hated what he was doing to himself. There would be no heartbreak or remorse of what the other characters could have or should have done to save his life. I think the other characters would have been more focused on themselves and would have just ignored him. Preston has made a huge impact on the story and I don't think it would be the same without him committing suicide.
ReplyDeleteThat's very interesting, I never thought about the entire story changing, and the characters themselves being different people if Preston had not died.
DeleteI agree with Kenz. I like how you talked about his impact as being huge.
DeleteThe character I have decided to randomly choose is Dillon. I picture him as a tall guy, who wears jeans, school t-shirts, and any other kind of typical clothing. I like him as a character because even though life hasn't exactly turned out the way he had wanted, he doesn't complain, he just pushes through it. He cares a lot about other people, like Jen and Stacie, and that also plays a role in how the book is starting to play out. He has a huge impact on the story because in a way, it's his story, and everything he does is going to determine which girl he ends up with.
ReplyDeleteI agree with his "push through" attitude.
DeleteNortie is one of my favorite characters from Stotan Week. He's a very insecure, and you can say coward, but after all he is a very strong guy. His behavior toward the problems life has put him through shows what a sad life he has, and what makes this worse is that it has affected him greatly. His father has always abused of his mother and him. For his birthday he woke up to the suicide of his brother, he saw this with his own eyes. His oldest brother couldn't bear anymore the life of abuse they lived, and gave up. Now, Nortie is hanging in there to protect his mother. He has great inspiration to be better than his dad, but if he doesn't overcome his insecurities it will be very hard. I would think after the scene at the daycare, that he needs special help to overcome the trauma he has gained at home. Still, he's a very strong guy and doesn't give up that's what I most admire of him.
ReplyDeleteGood description.
