Blog Response #12

Each novel has a setting or multiple settings.  How does your author create images of the setting?  If you had to describe the time/place of when your novel takes place, how would you do this?  Does the author use the setting to help develop the plot in your book?  What particular images does the author create that are memorable?  Is there a particular scene you can visualize, and why is this image so vivid?

**In response to the blogs, try to make connections with your novel's setting.  How is your setting similar to that of other books?

  1. i feel like my novel takes place in the future because the technology they have to all the stuff they have. i cant describe how im thinking it but i have a image in my head. it develops the plot because it makes the books scene and helps you picture it alot better. i can imagine the arena because they say trees so i kind of imagine woods but i dont know if the woods are thick.

  2. Chief who tells the entire story lays out the wards, and the lounge in the beginning of the book. It makes me wanna go insane if i had to live in conditions like that i would go nuts, kinda like whats happening to mac. It takes place in the 60s or so because they can smoke inside. I think the setting deals a lot with the plot because it makes mac turn crazy spending all that time with nutty people. Also their easier to persuade. Id say the ward their on is memorible because it reminds me of a jail kinda. Its the place their always at. White walls bared windows, glass nurse station.

  3. Because my book doesn't have a setting my blog will be about the authors purpose. At the beginning of this book the author stated a disclaimer that nothing he writes in the books is directly for the purpose of insulting anyone even though certain pieces could easily be taken as offensive. My author is trying to remove the stigma that religion and the existence of god is a topic that can't be debated. That for some reason even though religion is just as much of an opinion as politics or your stance on any other hot button issue. It is forbidden to debate in an open way with out someone being offended. My author is strongly against religion and trying to prove his argument with evidence and opinion to hopefully open up more of the world to truly debate if religion should remain in today society.

  4. James Patterson doesn't really describe the setting that is taking place. He has a talent to create a scene and have you imagine it without fully describing the scene that's taking place. You would get so into the story that you wouldn't notice that he didn't describe the scene. If I had to describe the place my novel takes place in it would be Washington, D.C. 1992. So far there are no scenes i can really visualize or memorable but there is a lot of scenes that stick out to me. There's a lot of them.

    3. Does your author not describe the setting at all?

I think it is cool for an author to let the reader create the setting on their own.

In a way most authors do this, for example, my book typically takes place in a hospital. The hospital is never described, it is just assumed that the reader can create what the scene looks like from prior knowledge.

  5. my book is into the wild. the setting is set all throughout north america. the author just gives a basic description of each setting Alex encounters because there are so many of them. the time it takes place is throughout the late 80's and early 90's. he goes all over the united states even down through mexico and ends up in Alaska where he passes away. the plot is all about the setting, because it doesn't stop talking about where he is at, and all the places he is at. the author really makes the place he passed away at memorable. a particular scene i can visualize is the "hunting lodge" he died in. it was a old abandoned bus parked out in the middle of the woods. it was fitted with a heater, a propane stove, storage areas for gear, and bunk beds to sleep in. this image is so vivid because the author keeps coming back to it over and over again

  6. the setting in the book the road is on the road, of course as u can tell from the title. about 75% they are on the road and the other 25% they are in the trees going threw houses and in towns looking for food and supply's to survive. the way McCARTHEY creates the setting, he describes them on the road, trees, in houses or, going threw towns. he dose such a good job creating the image in my head that I cant really describe it in words very well. most of the time the theme is dark and dreary and very rarely is the sun shining. I think the time of the novel takes place is its in the future and in the northern parts of the united states and they are traveling south to the coast wear its warmer. the setting describes the plot by them always being out side and the whether always changing there for changing the story. the most memorable images left in my mind is the man and the boy walking down the road in the snow hunched over the cart and cold. the one particular seen I remember is when they were walking into this abandon town when he heard a zoom past his head it was an arrow shot from the second floor of an old house he took the flare gun and shot in the house and wended him.

  7. The setting for the majority of my book is the Canadian wilderness, so I imagine it being very cold. The author uses this setting to add to the adversity that Buck and the other dogs must overcome. The image that has been the most memorable to me is when the weak, overworked dogs are beaten because they arent performing wrll enough, when in reality it is the owners fault.

  8. The author of my book often uses figurative language to create the setting. I would describe the setting of "The Lord of the Flies" as a small tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The time period is somewhere around the second world war. The author uses the setting to develop the plot of the book often, one example is when Jack's tribe is chasing Ralph around the island and he runs out of places to run because they are on a small island. One memorable image that the author creates is the wild fire on the island when they first try to build a signal fire. This image is vivid because the language the author uses is makes the scene come to life and the tension of the scene makes you want to visualize it in your head.

  9. I'm reading "Saving Max," and the setting is mostly in three places. The mental hospital, police department, and a hotel room. All of these places create a mysterious almost creepy feel. Of course there is a murder in my book, so it would make sense.

The setting gets one in the mood for this type of story, it's kind of typical. Hospitals in stories usually mean either someone is hurt or something creepy is going on.

    1. I actually read your book last year and I got the same kind of mood and feels from the way the book is particularity written. The setting I feel personally has a gloomy feel to it and theirs not much happiness to it at all. In saying that I can somewhat relate it with my book the last lecture cause the main character has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and only has three to six months to live which gives it the same gloomy feel.

    2. I'm reading The Running Dream and the setting in my book follows the plot very well. Both of our authors create a memorable image that are a big part of the plot of the book.

  10. In my book I have a few different settings in my book called The Running Dream. At the beginning of the book it was in the hospital because the main character (Jessica) was in a car accident. Then the setting switched over to Jessica's house and school. I could picture her house pretty well because she described her difficulty to get around the house because she only has one leg. Jessica also described her school pretty well and how she had to get around. The most clear setting that I can see is Jessica's running route. The setting follows the plot of the book. The most memorable part of my book is that seeing how Jessica never gave up hope. Also one scene that I pictured well is that when Jessica got her running leg she ran a ten mile race with her best friends, and the most special part is that she pushed one of her friends in a wheel chair for the whole race and never gave up. This boo was really inspiring and the point of this book was about seeing a person and getting to know them rather than knowing them by their condition.

When I am reading this novel I can almost feel the air go out of the audience when Randy shows them the picture of the 10 tumors in his liver. The image\moment that sticks with me most is when Randy brings out a birthday cake for his wife Jai and has all 400 people in the crowd sing happy birthday to her.

  12. My novel takes place in a very bad part of Massachusetts called Fall River. The author describes that when you are born in Fall River you don't leave Fall River. I picture Fall River as run down town but still has a very good High School that the main character Chris Herren attends. Reynolds definitely uses the setting to set up the whole plot of the book. He uses the high school basketball teams of Chris's older brother Michael to set up everything that happens and uses Fall River, which is the setting to do that. I can picture the houses and school that he describes really well. Fall River High School, he describes how it is very blue collar, white school. The one scene I cannot seem to get out of my head is just picturing Chris at age 17 just walking around Fall River all the time by himself and just talking to the author Bill Reynolds about the whole town. It's vivid because of the detail Chris goes into with everything about Fall River.

    1. It sounds like the mood of your book has a sense of negativity to it because even after winning the state championship and many other games theirs no silver lining or great beyond. I think the way the author describes fall River is very powerful- born in fall river you die in fall river.

  13. In The Maze Runner my author creates the setting by describing how old and unnatural the entire place seems. For a time and place it would probably be in the future as to how big and complex the maze really is. The setting in this book is the plot as it is the problem they face and it is the center of the plot. What images that are memorable for me is how he described the doors closing and the mass size of them moving.

  14. My book is like a post apocalyptic USA called Panem. I would like to say this book takes place in the 2100's. It is split up into 12 districts so there is electrical fences around the country. There are a lot of torn down and burned down buildings and houses. There isn't a lot of food and resources. There was one scene that was super easy to picture but it was in the first hunger games book. It was the reaping at the square. I could visualize seeing the fear in everyone's eyes. Some people's hands were shaking and a plethora of people had goose bumps up and down their bodies. I haven't had a seen yet in the second book that has caught my eye easily but I'm sure one will pop up soon.

  15. The story is set in a small town in Idaho called Trout, The author gives the best description of the places Louie visits throughout the book. The book was published in 1983 so i assume that the author used the time period to advantage. I would say yes the author uses the setting of the book because when Washington showed they were shocked that he was black. One image that was memorable was when Louie didn't care what color Washington was he still befriended him. One scene I could visualize is probably when Louie is at Becky funeral and totally lost it because the pastor didn't come up something original. This scene is so vivid because I can relate to wanting to explode just never do. He felt like they didn't really know her like he did.

  16. my book is like a magical medieval mix called middle earth. the setting varies from place to place in middle earth. you have places like the shire which is a warm and pleasant place with rolling hills of green. but then you have places like mirkwood. mirkwood is an enormous forest that is dark and sickly. it holds all kinds of dangers. the author uses the settings in the book to help build up suspense and a sense of danger or gives you a safe and warm sense. my favorite setting is when they are in mirkwood and you can feel the darkness and the sickness that the forest gives off while you are reading

  17. in the book american sniper the author lets you know that when he is at war it is nothing but hell he also talks about when he is at home which we would think it would be better but he says that the war changes people and that it is hard to go from fighting all the time to living in a civilian environment where you cant do the same thing's that you might be able to get away with over in war. The author also makes the setting develop a lot better from when he is at home or in the war from thing that happen in the war and things that happen in the war. The author makes so many memorable images in the book that it would be hard to list them but a couple would be his kids being born and all the helpful things he did for wounded vets that came back from war. In the book i visualize when Chris is in a building and the start to get attacked and one of his best friends gets shot you almost feel like you were there and witnessed it.

  18. In the book 'And Then There Were None' the book takes place in the past because it was written in 1939 about a group of ten people got sent letters inviting them to an island called "Indian Island" I would describe the setting as a gloomy mysterious island that's very small with a lot of trees surrounded the big house in the middle also the people there all dressed very nice. What I remember most is the Indian figures on the table. It started off with 10 of them and then everytime someone died one would disappear. A particular scene I could imagaine every detail would be when Blore one of the main characters his head had been crushed by a bear clock thrown out the window from Vera's room. I could imiagne that really good because it had a lot of vivid detail bescribing what crushed him.

Being raped in your own home where that is suppose to be your "safe place" isn't right that's why they create this setting fro you to get the feeling of what Precious feels like being raped in her own home. 21. In my book "The Outsiders" the author uses places as things that really set off where the characters are at. Like the vacant lot and the old church that the boys had to stay at. A part in the book that I visualized the best is when the church is on fire and the boys saved the kids that were in the church that didn't get out and when the roof caves in on johnny and how bad he would have been burnt after that. If I had to make a setting for this book I would have to talk about how drive in movie theaters are still a big thing and how you could smoke anywhere because is wasn't a big thing with second hand smoke and stuff like that.

  22. The Martian takes place on Mars with Mark Watney stranded all by himself. The author creates the images in my head by using descriptions that are really vivid. For example, he lined up the rocks to spell out "A OK" or when they had the largest gathering ever for an unmanned launch at Cape Canaveral. I also believe that the book takes place in the future because I don't see NASA going to Mars in the next couple years. I think the author uses the setting to develop the plot because he had to fight for survival on Mars and it was very difficult to do so. The Cape Canaveral scene with lots of people there is very vivid because I see lots of people just standing there just hoping he's able to make it back to Earth.

  24. One scene in the book Unbroken that stands out is where they're trapped on the raft and get taken to be prisoners of war. The crew thought they were going to die and all hope was lost with sharks circling them. The way the book makes you picture is there is no hope what so ever but they soon hear a plane and get so excited. Just to find out that it was people coming to take you as a prisoner of war. That scene really stuck out to me in the setting area because it is all open water and the sun is constantly beating down on them. Then soon after Hillenbrand uses the prisoner of war camp as the next setting and that is where the book comes together and Louie learns things about his mental toughness probably no other human being could do.

  25. Gayle Forman creates images by describing the scenes very clearly and with details. I think the time and place of wen the novel takes place is in the 2000's. Yes, the author used the setting to help develop the plot because she describes portland to be very peaceful and boring and I visualized portland to be boring because of the two lane in which they got into a car crash. I dont think that the time period really has a bunch to do with the book because its not based on true events that revolve around stories of history. 27. The setting in the "Books Thief" helps create a sad mood. Under Hitlers demand the whole country is suffering. Especially in a small town like Molching. Most of the people are poor due to the war. There's a lot of fear among everyone as they prepare their basements for the worse. The setting in my book causes Liesel to be send to foster parents, her brothers death, her bestfriends death, stealing food and books. The dangerous of all is hiding a Jew. The setting causes the reader adrenaline at points of danger, it transfers depression of the characters hardships.

  28. In my book there is no setting it's more of a path chooser. There are three paths. The path ahead, the path around, and the path to nowhere. You decide which you take. I imagine if you take the path ahead there will be many opportunities for you endless and you will have a happy life. The path around is getting by but not getting everything you want it's like being stuck in the middle. The path to nowhere i imagine as a bright beautiful entrance, but then as you keep going you get lost in the beauty which eventually becomes darkness, and you become stuck. It's all about the path you choose from the beginning. The path ahead entering doesn't look like the nicest one but if you take it things become much better for you and you have freedom.

The author also made another thin g clear to me, the concentration camp was another thing that was also very clear to imagine in my head.I dont think I could have described the setting any better then the author did. The author was forced to explain it very detailed because it was a new place for the main character. The scene that is very visual in my head is the dirty servants and dirty people in the concentration camps, also the outside of the house.

Bruno moves away from his home confused why they moved to a house that is less nice then their old one. The author has to explain the aroma around the house and mood to feel brunos pain of moving. He ends up find a consentrAtion camp and the author also explains that so you can feel remorse for the people and for the tragic ending.

The author talks about all the time and affection they're sharing between them. I think the image of them walking and holding one another is the main image that sticks out so vividly to me. When Amanda and Dawson are together I just picture the setting very sunny, and a overall happy mood. I think the setting could also be described as romantic.
